Social Work Anti-Racist Coalition of Kentucky

Social workers in Kentucky today announced the formation of the Social Work Anti-Racism Coalition of Kentucky (SWARCK), bringing education and delivering action and accountability to the profession. The Social Worker Anti-Racism Coalition of Kentucky believes it is the responsibility of social workers to focus on the elimination of white supremacy in micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice. Our work is powered by intersectionality, social justice, social action, institutional accountability, practice reform, and policy activism.

We will focus on a tiered system of goals across all levels of social work practice, including clinical, organizational, academia, and political advocacy. We will deliver concrete goals for assessment, action, and accountability at each level of practice.

The SWARCK is important and urgently needed to provide education, calls to action, and an ongoing and sustainable force against white supremacy in Kentucky.

Our first call to action is for all social workers to be involved at any level and contribute to this important mission. We will quickly form a list of goals for social workers in Kentucky.

For more information, please contact Melissa Johnson, LCSW or Cassie Brown, LCSW at SWARCKentucky@gmail.com

Greetings,

It is our honor and privilege to host a live presentation with Ms. Betty Daniels Rosemond on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 from 12:00pm-1:00pm (EST) via GoToMeeting (contact brosen.naswky@socialworkers.org to get the link).  Her amazing story is exactly what we need right now and we are excited to share her wisdom and voice with our Kentucky chapter!  We will be taping her extraordinary story if you are unable to attend her live presentation.

Please note this is only open to NASW-KY members and social work students through their universities.  We are NOT advertising this on social media because we do not want to risk any interruptions so please do NOT share this on your social media.  Once the taping is complete, we will add it to our FREE NASW-KY Membership Podcast CEU list, along with the upcoming second and third presentation from our 2020 Courageous Conversations program.  We are committed to engaging, educating and empowering our professional and student voices by sharing these remarkable stories!

A special shout out to Karen Thompson, LCSW, NASW-KY Northern Branch Chair, for organizing our Courageous Conversations series, and Austin Weiler, BSW, NASW-KY MSW Representative- WKU, for the beautiful flyers to celebrate these wonderful opportunities!  We will be sharing our Courageous Conversations flyer this week when we go LIVE with our NEW MyNASW-Kentucky Community page for members.  Lots of great things happening with our Kentucky chapter and we are grateful to each of YOU for your membership, social work passion, and support.  If you are not currently a member of NASW/NASW-KY, now is the perfect time to join and enjoy many benefits of our national and chapter services:  www.socialworkers.org

NASW-KY September Events

Greetings!

We hope our NASW-KY message finds each of you doing well during these busy weeks of this unprecedented semester!  We cannot thank you enough for everything you are doing to help prepare, support and educate our future social workers under these difficult circumstances and uncertainties ahead.  We want to continue to be actively engaged with our Kentucky schools of social work this year and virtual technology is definitely helping us to connect and collaborate though we sincerely miss our face to face visits!

We are planning a lot of live and taped programs that will be wonderful opportunities for us to support our social work students.  We are happy to share some of the great things happening this month that we hope you will enjoy with your students.   These can be great learning agreement additions and course discussions whether online or face to face classes.  Mrs. Rosemond is the first of three speakers for our new "Courageous Conversations" series this fall and we will have the formal flyer sent out to you very soon with the registration information.  Please see her flyer below!

Please reach out to me with any questions, ideas or comments as we are excited to work with you and make this academic year a success for everyone involved.  We would love to schedule virtual class visits to discuss our legislative and advocacy work, policy and ethics, our racial justice initiatives, and self care so please contact us anytime!
